Happy to give back: Former Tiger football stars Williams, Temple plan charity events.

That’s what happened two years ago when a handful of former teammates joined Williams in Springfield for a football camp that attracted about 40 kids from area grade schools.

“To be honest, we just wanted to get the guys back together and have a good time,” he said. “It’s fun to hang out and talk about old times.”

In the course of two years, Williams’ event has followed the same path his waistline took during his time at MU: It’s exploded.

Williams, a captain and first-team All-Big 12 nose tackle on Missouri’s 2007 team, will host the third annual Lorenzo Williams and Friends Charity Weekend in Springfield July 8-9. The weekend includes a celebrity pro-am golf event at Millwood Golf and Racquet Club and a youth football camp at the Lake Country Soccer Complex.

A loaded cast of former MU players is expected to attend both events and serve as camp instructors, including Jeremy Maclin, Sean Weatherspoon, Martin Rucker, Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, Blaine Gabbert and Aldon Smith. The former players are not paid for their appearance, though sponsors pick up their meals and hotel bills, said Brian Cheever, who helps organize the event.

Williams added the golf outing to last year’s event and 36 teams participated. This year, a second flight was added to the schedule and 51 teams have already secured places in the pro-am.
